Therapeutic Brushing

Therapeutic brushing is a technique to help a child with sensory dysfunction.

First, my disclaimer:  get some professional advice.  I am not a professional and this is not advice!

From THIS website: To use this technique with out instruction from a trained therapist could be harmful at the extreme, and at the minimum, useless.

Maddie had a lot of sensory issues.  She saw an occupational therapist through her early intervention program who assessed Maddie and taught me the process.

For approximately one year, I did therapeutic brushing with Maddie.  The “real” name for brushing is Wilbarger Protocol.

Using a soft plastic surgical brush, there is a pattern to brush in, for a set amount of time, ending the session with joint compressions.  There are specific areas you are NOT supposed to brush.  This is done every 4 hours throughout the day.  It is a commitment.

In my experience, it was worthwhile.  It helped Maddie be more aware of the space her body occupies (proprioception) and with being more OK with different textures/ pressures/ sensory input (tactile defensiveness).
